OpenAI data centre head Chris Malone leaves company amid leadership reshuffle

Chris MaloneOpenAI executive Chris Malone, who was helping oversee the artificial intelligence (AI) company’s data centre buildout, has left the company, Bloomberg reports.Malone had joined OpenAI as its head of data centres and was involved in overseeing the company’s infrastructure expansion.“Earlier this year, we reorganised our infrastructure organisation to support the scale and pace of our work.

We have a strong, deeply experienced data centre team in place, with clear leadership and the technical expertise to execute our plans,” Bloomberg cited an OpenAI spokesperson as saying.Malone’s departure comes amid a series of executive changes at the ChatGPT maker in recent months.Longtime executive Brad Lightcap announced earlier this month that he would leave OpenAI to pursue a new project.

Fidji Simo, who oversaw much of the company’s core business, stepped down last month after taking medical leave.

Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s former product chief, left the company in April.The Wall Street Journal earlier reported Malone’s departure, noting that OpenAI has recently made leadership changes within its infrastructure team.

The company has appointed a chief technology officer to lead its computing capacity.OpenAI is also reviving some data centre initiatives, including projects involving the leasing of entire facilities, with other executives now leading those efforts, the Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.Malone did not immediately respond to a message sent on LinkedIn, Bloomberg added in its report.The company also recently appointed Dali Rajic, president and chief operating officer of Alphabet-owned Wiz, as its new chief revenue officer.

Rajic is OpenAI’s second CRO in less than a year and succeeds Denise Dresser, who was appointed to the role in December.
