US eases curbs on Anthropic's Mythos 5 AI model for trusted partners

Dario Amodei, CEO, Anthropic. The US government on Friday let Anthropic release its Mythos 5 AI model to some trusted partners, according to a Commerce Department letter seen by Reuters. The move comes two weeks after the US government ordered Anthropic to suspend access to some of its models, citing fears they could be deployed by countries of concern, including China and Russia. As a result, more than 100 companies and institutions will now have access to Mythos 5, including many Fortune 500 companies, a source familiar with the matter said, declining to be identified due to the sensitivity of the matter.US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said in a letter to Anthropic that the two sides had made "significant progress" in addressing risks associated with the models.Lutnick added that an export license will no longer be needed for Mythos 5 for trusted companies and their foreign national employees.

However, restrictions remain in place for companies not on the approved list.Fable 5 was not mentioned in the letter, though a source familiar with the matter told Reuters that the government is working toward allowing its release as well.IPO-bound Anthropic has had a rocky relationship with the US government this year.

The company refused to allow the US military to use its AI models for domestic surveillance or for fully autonomous weapons systems, and the government retaliated by adding it to a national security blacklist.
