Chamath Palihapitiya, the former Facebook executive known for leading several SPAC deals, recently became the chief executive of enterprise AI coding startup 8090 Labs, marking his first full-time operating role in more than a decade.The company also announced a $135 million Series A funding round led by Salesforce Ventures.In a post on X, Palihapitiya said, “I am convinced that what we are building now is even more important, so there was no decision to make except to be all in.”Eric Wu, who stepped down as chief executive of Opendoor in 2023, has also launched a new AI startup called NavigateAI, which develops AI copilots for construction workers.
The company has raised $25 million in seed funding.
Wu said, “I knew if I looked back in 10 years and didn’t do something related to it, I would probably regret that.”The publication noted that even experienced technology leaders are opting for individual contributor roles at frontier AI companies.
Anthropic and OpenAI use the title “Member of Technical Staff” for technical employees regardless of seniority, reflecting a flatter organisational structure.Peter Bailis, who became Workday’s chief technology officer last year, also left the role within months to join Anthropic as a Member of Technical Staff.
