Mukesh Ambani, Sunil Mittal named founding members of ITU-backed AI commission

Mukesh Ambani Reliance Industries Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani and Bharti Enterprises Founder and Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal have been named founding members of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)-backed AI for Good Global Commission, joining a global panel of 44 commissioners tasked with advancing the responsible development and deployment of artificial intelligence.According to a report by PTI, the AI for Good Global Commission, launched by the United Nations' specialised telecommunications agency, aims to develop practical pathways to strengthen trust in AI, expand access to the technology, and accelerate its application to solve global challenges.The commission is co-chaired by Rwanda President Paul Kagame and Salesforce Chair and Chief Executive Officer Marc Benioff, while ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin serves as vice-chair.According to the commission, the body brings together more than 40 founding members, including heads of state and government, industry leaders and heads of UN agencies, to address the opportunities and challenges arising from the rapid advancement of AI.The commission will focus on three core pillars—AI Trust, AI Access and AI Impact.

Its work will include promoting responsible AI to build public trust, improving global AI infrastructure and capacity, and accelerating the use of AI to tackle pressing global issues.Bharti Enterprises confirmed Mittal's appointment, saying he had been named a founding member of the global initiative convened by the ITU.The official AI for Good Global Commission announcement also listed Ambani among the founding members and commissioners.The commission builds on the work of the ITU and the UNESCO Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development, which have played a key role in shaping global policies on digital connectivity, inclusion, and economic development.The AI for Good Global Commission will hold its inaugural meeting during the AI for Good Global Summit 2026, scheduled to take place in Geneva, Switzerland, from July 7 to 10.

The summit forms part of Digital Week, which also includes the first UN-mandated Global Dialogue on AI Governance and the WSIS Forum 2026.
