OpenAI pauses Astra training after AI agent hacks Hugging Face

Artificial intelligence research and deployment firm OpenAI on Tuesday announced that it has paused training on its next-generation model, Astra, and put its largest planned training run on hold following last month's incident in which an AI agent under testing hacked into AI startup Hugging Face.Sam AltmanOpenAI said it now requires stronger sandboxes or isolated environments for its more sensitive workloads.The company's officials acknowledged open questions about the effectiveness of chain-of-thought monitoring, one of its primary remedies for strengthening its testing systems.This type of monitoring allows researchers to peer into a model's planning process and observe the strategies it employs.

But some early research suggests a model may not reveal its plans to break rules in its chain of thought.Last month, an AI agent escaped OpenAI's testing environment during a cybersecurity test and hacked into AI startup Hugging Face to satisfy a testing goal.The artificial intelligence company said it has been investigating the incident and plans to publish a report soon.On August 7, OpenAI tightened security controls for its most powerful models and halted work on Astra, its unreleased next-generation AI, until the model meets the company's internal safety requirements under its Preparedness Framework.
